Dutch Tidal Energy Supplier Tocardo Signs Dealership Agreement In Japan

TOCARDO International, a tidal energy supplier from the Netherlands, has made a significant step in commercializing its TOCARDO Tidal Turbine Technology by signing a dealership contract for Japan with Spectol Power Design Co., Ltd. (SPD).

TOCARDO is targeting Japan as a highly promising market for tidal and river energy generation and is delighted to link up with SPD as its preferred business partner there. Together, they will focus on turbine supply deals of 18 MW over the coming three years.

Tocardo acts both in the fileds of in-stream energy devices and as well as in tidal turbines.

In 2008 a pre-commercial demonstration project based on the Tocardo Aqua T50 turbine (10-53 kW nominal capaciy) was commissioned in one of the barrages in the Netherlands. In the same year clean tech fund E2C invested in the technology.

Starting from 2012 the company plans to offer offshore turbine T500 with capacity between 350 and 500 kW.

Ecofys has combined two types of rotor on a single axis of rotation. The so called Wave Rotor is able to convert not only tidal currents, but also waves into electricity. The latter is possible because waves are made up of circulating water particles.

The energy from tides and waves is directly converted into rotational movement, driving a generator. Therefore the system does not need any inefficient conversion steps.

The current status of the technology or deployment is not known.

The company develops tidal turbines. The Blue Motion Energy places radial seawalls around the vertically mounted rotor and, therefore, it funnels the current and significantly increases the flow velocity independently of the direction of the current. The company claims that this setup allows event 70% increase in the turbine efficiency.

At the moment the plants are developed with an output of 6 MW and 3 MW which can be built on land. The structure is then transported via river to the sea. The construction is placed on the seabed. Subsequently the rotor and generator are installed.

The construction technology for larger plants is subject of further research. These plants can be constructed with modules at a longer distance from the shore.
